Lafourche Parish

The longest street in the world, known locally as LA 1, ends its meandering journey at the Gulf of Mexico in Lafourche Parish.  The end of the road however is just the beginning of the bustling activity of oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, a vast majority of which is serviced out of this tip of Louisiana.  Where LA 1 entered the parish to the north, it passed miles and miles of fertile farmland planted with row upon row of sugar cane on its journey south.

As the road enters historic Thibodaux, its name changes first to St. Mary and then to Main Street as it threads through the parish's seat of government, retail mecca and home to the regional university, Nicholls State.  Moving on through the communities of Raceland, Matthews and Lockport, the road intersects one of Louisiana's primary east/west transportation routes, I-49/US 90 with connections eastward to New Orleans and westward to Lafayette, Lake Charles and Houston.

LA 1 enters the South Lafourche area at Larose and continues south through Cut Off, Galliano and Golden Meadow through communities strong in their Cajun heritage and alive with industry built largely through the entrepreneurial vision of persons whose ancestory is traced directly to the Acadians who settled the area generations ago.  In its final leg down to the Gulf, the road is lifted above the marsh and estuaries to an elevated engineering marvel that will support the steady flow of traffic to the Gulf and to the industrial Port Fourchon.
